There has been a lot more information and excitement coming out of the world of CBD, so we wanted to give you some information on this topic to help you stay informed.

What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is an active ingredient in the cannabis Sativa plant (commonly referred to as marijuana or hemp). It is only one of the many active ingredients in the plant.

What is the difference between CBD and THC?
CBD is not THC. They are two separate active ingredients that come from the Cannabis Sativa plant, but they do not act the same way. THC is what produces the “high” effect that is described from the cannabis Sativa plant.

What does CBD do?
The world of CBD is continuously growing and more research about the compound is coming out every day. At this time CBD is FDA approved to treat childhood epilepsy, but it has been researched and investigated to treat chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia as well as a multitude of other conditions. In the realm of physical therapy we have been focusing on the effect of CBD and chronic pain.
CBD works in the body to maintain homeostasis or the natural balance of the human body. It can do this by acting on injured tissues to decrease inflammation and calm nerves down to prevent increased sensitivity to help ease the pain.

What are the side effects?
The most commonly reported side effects of CBD are generally well-tolerated, but include dry mouth, diarrhea, decreased appetite, drowsiness, nausea, fatigue, and irritability.
Additionally, CBD may impact your medications (particularly if you are on blood thinners).
It is always recommended to contact your physician before determining if CBD is right for you.

Is CBD addictive?
No. According to the World Health Organization CBD in pure forms has no risk of dependence.

CBD can be used in topical forms, such as a lotion, to provide relief from pain that can be used in conjunction with physical therapy. CBD can be used to provide temporary topical relief while you’re attending physical therapy for long-term relief and improved function.

Here at John Goetze Physical therapy we will soon be offering CBD topicals and ingestibles in the near future as an adjunct to physical therapy. Please call if you have any more questions.
